Often when it comes to destination events for a wedding we only think of the wedding day, but what about a destination engagement session? These are quickly becoming one of my favorite things and something my fiance and did ourselves since we are having a hometown wedding day!
When to Consider a Destination Engagement Session
I don’t think there is any right or wrong time to plan a destination engagement session. However, I do think there are a few reasons why I would encourage it!
- You are having a hometown wedding and want to have photos with each other in a different location.
- Your destination location is somewhere special to the two of you and your relationship.
- There is a photographer you would love to work with but they aren’t local to you so bringing them in for your wedding doesn’t make sense to your budget. But going to them could be a fun trip together and allow you to work with them!
Over the years, I have fallen in love with a few places in particular for destination engagement sessions!
California
This session will always go down as one of my favorites. Not only because I was able to capture two of my best friends engagement photos, but also because we had such a fun time doing it in Malibu at El Matador Beach! We explored, spent some quality time together and got to capture them at the beach – which is one of their favorite places to be together.

Washington
When Naomi and Christian asked me to come to Washington for their engagement session, I couldn’t say yes fast enough! I loved that we did a mix for their session of both downtown Seattle and the beautiful mountains that Washinton State has to offer.

Cancun
With lots of time together for their destination wedding in Cancun, we snuck in a quick engagement session. They were dressed up for their welcome party so we ran down to the beach. I love that we did this not only because of their love for the beach, but to have some photos of them in more casual outfits before the big day!
